Undisputedly the most popular board riding water sport on the planet. Nothing beats the feeling of catching, riding a wave, and the peace existing with nature. All you need is a board, a leg rope, some wax, and waves. Every surf session is different, every wave teaches you something new, and the progression never truly ends.

WHY SURFING?

  • Connect with the Ocean: One of the best things about surfing is being immersed in the ocean. Nothing beats the feel of the waves as they roll past you, connecting with the rhythm of the ocean, the tides, the swell, and the conditions around you.

  • Endless Progression: Surfing has one of the most rewarding progression curves of any sport. From your very first wave to carving turns, surfing bigger waves, or improving style and flow — there is always another level to reach.

  • Minimal Equipment: Surfing at it's core is simple. A board, some waves, and time in the water are all you need to create unforgettable sessions.

  • Different Riding Styles: Ride longboards, shortboards, fishes, mid-lengths, softboards, or performance shapes depending on your style and conditions.

  • Lifestyle and Community: Surfing naturally creates connection. Early mornings with mates, road trips chasing swell, and sharing waves with family and friends become part of the lifestyle as much as the sport itself.

STARTING OUT:
If your completely new and looking for your first board, here is a guide.

  • Bigger Boards Make Learning Easier: Most beginners learn faster on larger, higher-volume boards because they provide more stability and paddle power. Softboards are often the best starting point thanks to their forgiving design and added safety.

  • Focus on Small Clean Waves: Learning in smaller, gentle waves helps build confidence and consistency much faster than attempting difficult or crowded conditions.

  • Paddling is Everything: One of the biggest parts of surfing is paddling. Building paddle fitness, positioning, and timing takes practice, but it is the foundation of catching more waves.

  • Consistency Builds Confidence: The more time you spend in the water, the faster your surfing improves. Even short sessions help develop wave knowledge, timing, balance, and confidence.

PROGRESSING:
Once you have a few waves under your belt, surfing becomes all about refining technique and finding the right equipment for your style.

  • Transition to Smaller Boards: As skills improve, many surfers begin moving toward shorter or more performance-focused boards that offer increased manoeuvrability and responsiveness.

  • Understanding Board Shapes: Different boards suit different conditions and surfing styles. Volume, rocker, rails, fin setup, width, and length all influence performance.

  • Developing Wave Knowledge: Learning where waves break, how different sandbanks work, and how conditions change throughout the day becomes increasingly important. Common lingo terms to know: wave peak, rip/riptide, wave face, left-hander / right-hander, set wave, lull, glassy.

SURFING ETIQUETTE:

In surfing, there are a set of unwritten rules that everyone abides to to make sure everyone stays safe and has a good time.

DO's

DONT's

Understand the break before you go out

Drop in - on surfer already on the wave

Respect the locals

Paddle directly in front of a surfer

Wear a leg-rope

Ditch your board - hold onto it/keep it under control

Paddle wide

Snake - similar to "cutting in line"

Apologise if you make a mistake

Nobody gets it right 100% of the time, but if we all do our part we can all share the stoke!

Surfing is a Journey:
Surfing confidence and skill is directly related to the hours you spend paddling, catching and riding waves. Hey; it’s not rocket science, but it does take a lot of time and a whole lot of perseverance. You will have your crap sessions and your epic sessions, and they all count. Every average session is experience and helps makes a good session better than good. Surfing with a bunch of mates or family and sharing the fun time is as good as it gets.
